Southeast's own...

Buena Vista house, located in Jackson Park, is in a sorry state. Plaster falling off, holes in the wood, loose bricks...

And then this: Four Roanoke homes land on the endangered list.

From the article: "The Buena Vista Recreational Center on Penmar Avenue has a game room, dance floor and craft room, and houses the offices of the historic resources department, according to Buschor. Villa Heights has similar amenities.

"Those buildings are no longer of use to the department," he said.

Many people have affection for historic homes that have been turned into recreation centers, specifically Buena Vista, in Jackson Park.

Corbin Wilson, an 80-year-old resident of Southeast Roanoke, said that as a child he would sneak into the home to play.

"It should be preserved," he said. "A coat of paint, or anything like that, would help."

This subject will be brought up at the next meeting of the Southeast Action Forum, Inc.

June 6th at 7pm, Police Substation/Old Firehouse #6 1015 Jamison Ave. SE

This meeting will also feature elections, discussions about the new possible constitution and by-laws, and some brainstorming sessions for our next events.

We hope to see you there.

I just read the entire article concerning the endangered homes in Roanoke. It appears to me Southeast is not on our city's radar. Why do they have a link to a photo gallery for Mountain View, but not one single photo of Buena Vista?
I seem to remember about a month or so ago, contractors donated their time and some supplies to remodel a home here in Roanoke. Why can't we try that same approach. The city says financial constraints have slowed restoration. If the city will provide the materials, can we get builders and contractors to donate their time to restore these landmarks. Specifically Buena Vista.

My husband and I recently purchased a home on Buena Vista and began moving into it over Memorial weekend. I look forward to interacting with my new neighbors in friendship and with projects that are beneficial to our area (as well as the rest of Roanoke).

Welcome to the neighborhood Flo. We would like to invite you to the next meeting - June 6th at 7pm.

Information will be posted on the blog as we get closer to the date. We will have a Roanoke Welcome Basket there for you, and anyone else new to the area.

Hope to see you there.

Thanks for the invite. I plan on coming with neighbors Nancy and Awbry (not sure if I've spelled his name correctly).

Looking forward to that welcome basket; I love presents. :))
