Clean-Up Day

The Southeast Action Forum team hit the streets on Saturday, March 31st at 9am.

The rain set in around 10.

We left from the Substation on 11th and Bullitt, and worked our way down to 13th, grabbing every piece of trash and junk along the way that we could.

We were assisted by a team of folks from the Rescue Mission, who worked in near unison - much like a well oiled machine. By the time we hit the corner of 13th and Bullitt - we had accumulated 4 loaded bags of trash.

It started drizzling as we turned the corner down 13th, and the skies behind us were getting darker.

We made it to 13th and Tayloe before we had to seek shelter under some very thin trees. Perhaps had it been a few weeks later, when the leaves were more fully developed - we would have been better sheltered.

We were able to hit 2 vacant lots along the way, one of which yielded 4 bags of trash, one realtor sign from ages past and the metal frame in which it once stood. Had it not been raining as hard as it was - we could have probably squeezed out another 5 bags.
The crew was daunted... and damp.

We headed back to Advance Auto Parts where the Rescue Van would be meeting us, and still we picked up trash along the way... we were nearly unstoppable.

Grand Total: 17 heavy duty bags of junk and flotsam. Very heavy bags. 1 ancient metal sign for LT McGhee Realty, and 1 twisted metal sign holder, 1 sneaker, some carpeting and padding, countless plastic bottles and cups (anyone ever heard of recycling????), oh - and a checkbook - still full of checks (and deposit slips) which has been turned over to the bank which it was from for proper disposal.

All in all, it was a good day - and with any luck next year - bigger crowd, bigger bags, and more lots. Lots more lots.
